Denis I. Sofronov

Position: researcher at the Surgical Department No. 9 (vertebral oncology) of the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology, pediatric oncologist

Dr. Sophronov has experience in all types of surgical interventions including extensive, combination, reconstructive, minimally invasive (vertebral and osteoplastic surgery) in treatment of primary and metastatic tumors of the bones, soft tissues localized on the trunk, pelvis, spine, retroperitoneal space. He has performed more than 200 open and minimally invasive surgeries. He has mastered all types of diagnostic biopsies (of peripheral lymph nodes, bones, soft tissues in any location including under X-ray, CT and ultrasound control).

Education

In 2009, Dr. Sofronov graduated from the N.I. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University with specialization in medical care. In 2010, he was a surgical clinical intern at the O.M. Filatov City Clinical Hospital No. 15. In 2010, he started academic residency and subsequently a PhD program at the Department of Vertebral Surgery of the N.N. Blokhin Russian Oncological Research Center with specialization in surgery. In 2016, he successfully defended his PhD thesis “Surgical treatment of tumors of the sacroiliac localization.”

Dr. Sofronov’s advanced training includes “Emergency surgery” professional improvement course at the A.I. Evdokimov Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry in 2012; “Endoscopy and video assistance in surgery of injuries and disorder of the thoracic and lumbar spine”, professional improvement course at the Stoz manipulation center in 2014; “Extreme Orthopaedic Academy” in Istanbul, Turkey in 2015; “Surgery” course at the Russian Scientific Center of Roentgen Radiology in 2016; professional improvement course on oncological endoprostheses of the knee and hip joints under Pr. Boaz Liberman in Tel-Aviv, Israel in 2017; “Oncology” course at the at the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education in 2017; “Radiofrequency and high-frequency methods of skin neoplasm destruction” course at the Department of Dermatovenerology, Mycology and Cosmetology of the Central State Medical Academy in 2017; “Children’s Oncology” course at the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education in 2017; “X-ray endovascular diagnosis and treatment” at the Sechenov First Moscow State University in 2017.

Professional experience

Since 2015, Dr. Sofronov works as a researcher at the Department of Vertebral Oncology of the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology.

Scientific interests

Dr. Sofronov’s scientific interests include current techniques in spinal surgery, surgical treatment of tumors of the pelvic bones including use of individual endoprostheses and reconstruction and plastic surgery; surgical treatment of the sacrum; minimally invasive and endoscopic methods of diagnosis of bone tumors; surgical treatment of tumors of the soft tissues; diagnosis and surgical treatment of skin tumors; palliative care.

Publications

Dr. Sofronov has authored and co-authored 20 articles in Russian and international journals, 2 patents for inventions for medical purposes. Dr. Sofronov regularly participates in Russian and international conferences and workshops.

Dr. Sofronov serves as the academic secretary of the Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Tumors of the Skin journal.

Membership in professional medical organizations

Dr. Sofronov is a member of the East European Sarcoma Group (EESG).
