Education
Pr. Kotz graduated from the University of Vienna. After that, he went to the USA for practice and got his equivalence medical degree in 1970 from the Educational Council of Medical graduates. Between 1970 and 1974, he had completed specialized training in orthopedics with Univ. Prof.â. Chiari. In 1994 he became a deputy director of the Vienna Orthopedic Department and head of the Tumor Team of the Orthopedic Department of Vienna. In 1979, Pr. Kotz received the DSc degree.
Professional experience
Prof. Dr. Rainer Kotz worked during his early years in the orthopedics unit at the University of Vienna. Later he was promoted to deputy director in the same tumor orthopedics unit in 1974, where he was in charge of the unit. He also served in the USA for almost four years, where he also did his diploma in pediatric tumor orthopedics, and after his return he practiced it in Austria. Currently, Prof. Kotz is associated with Wiener Privatklinik and serves there as the most senior orthopedics oncology specialist
Through the years, Pr. Kotz has headed many professional organizations. He served as the president of Austrian Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (1998–1999), European Society for Musculoskeletal Oncology (EMSOS) (1990–1993), Academy of Education and Post-graduate Medical Research in Vienna (1992–2000), Association for the Promotion of Science and Research at the General Hospital of Vienna (VFWF) (1995), German Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (DGOT) (1997), International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) (1999–2002), Austrian Society of Surgery (ÖGC) (2004–2005). He also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society for Orthopedic Research (EORS).
Publications
Pr. Kotz has served as an editor at the Bone and Joint Surgery (1996–2000), International Orthopaedics (1993–1996), Journal of Orthopedics (1988–2003) journals. Since 1991, he serves a consultant editor at the La Chirurgia Degli Organi di Movimento journal, reviews the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery A and Journal of Orthopaedic Research.
Memberships in professional medical organizations
Apart from his supervision of multiple professional organizations, Pr. Kotz is a member of the German Society of Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC), Austrian X-ray Society, Austrian Musculoskeletal Oncology Society (AMSOS), Supreme Council of Health, Cancer Assistance – Disability and Difficult Diseases for Romania, Austrian Society of Surger. In 2010, he received a title of Citizen of Honor of the Medical University of Vienna.
Awards
In 1995, Pr. Kotz received the Medieval Merit of the Austrian Rotkreuze Youth. In 2002, he received the Gold Medal of Vienna and Henry Dunant Medal of the International Red Cross. In 2004, he was awarded the Erich Lexer Award. In 2005, he received the Erwin-Schrödinger Award of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Medal of Honor for Services to the Land of Vienna. In 2006, he was awarded the Silver Medal for services to the Republic of Austria. In 2007, he became the MUVI Patron of the Year. In 2008, Pr. Kotz was awarded the Order of Sanitary Merit of the Organization of Helping Cancer Patients, Disabled People and Incurable Patients in Romania.
