Dr. Bokhyan’s scientific and practical work is associated with the problem of combination and integrated treatment of soft tissue sarcoma and malignant skin tumors. Dr. Bokhyan is a respected and established specialist in treatment of soft tissue sarcomas in Russia. Over the years he has participated in development of many new innovative approaches to treatment of soft tissue sarcomas. He has authored patented methods of combination treatment of malignant tumors of the soft tissues. Many years in one of the most famous and established sarcoma clinics (founded by the Academician N.N. Trapeznikov) allowed Dr. Bokhyan to accumulate enormous experience in therapy of bone, soft tissue and skin neoplasms. Dr. Bokhyan is a renowned leader in treatment of soft tissue sarcomas. He has all the necessary skills to perform combination (chemotherapy, operative treatment) therapy of sarcomas, dermatoscopy, various types of skin tumors treatment.

Education

In 1990, Dr. Bokhyan graduated from the Erevan State Medical Institute with honors. Between 1990 and 1992, he was a resident at the Department of General Oncology of the N.N. Blokhin Russian Oncological Research Center. In 1994, he successfully defended his PhD thesis “Continuous intraarterial chemotherapy in treatment of soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities” under supervision of Academician N.N. Trapeznikov.

Every 5 years Dr. Bokhyan completes certification courses for professional improvement at the Russian State Medical University and Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. He has active certificates in “Oncology” (chemotherapy), “Surgery”, “Expert evaluation of medical care quality as part of Obligatory Medical Insurance.”

Professional experience

Since 1990, Dr. Bokhyan works as a doctor at the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology. Since 2000 he also works as a senior researcher at the Department of General Oncology of the Scientific Research Institute of Oncology of the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology.

Dr. Bokhyan has coordinated six international phase 2-3 clinical trials on the effectiveness of new drugs in treatment of sarcomas and skin cancer. Three trials are still ongoing.

Scientific interests

Dr. Bokhyan’s scientific interests include combination and integrated treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas, combination treatment of malignant tumors of the skin, study of the effectiveness of various regiments of preoperative chemotherapy of soft tissue sarcomas, 3D modeling of removed tissues for increase radicalization of surgical intervention, study of different factors contributing to sarcoma progression, determination of prognostically unfavorable group for intensified therapy.

Publications

Dr. Bokhyan has more than 300 publications including abstracts, original articles in Russian and international publications (Problems in Oncology; Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Tumors of the Skin; Journal of Clinical Oncology, European Journal of Cancer, Mayo Clinic Proceeding), chapters in 5 monographs, two national guidelines on oncology, textbooks. The main topics of publications are soft tissue sarcomas and skin tumors.

Dr. Bokhyan has participated in various Russian and international congresses on epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment of sarcomas and melanoma. He has presented multiple reports and lectures at various conferences and workshops. He regularly participates in master classes and lecture cycles for specialists of Russian regional and republican oncological dispensaries, workshops “Soft tissue sarcomas. Current approaches to diagnosis and treatment” as part of the EESG scientific and educational program.

Dr. Bokhyan is one of the authors of the current clinical guidelines and standards on treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas and skin tumors of the Ministry of Health of Russia.

Dr. Bokhyan has supervised two PhD dissertations. He is a co-author of the patent “Method of desmoid tumor treatment using thermoradiotherapy.”

Dr. Bokhyan serves as deputy editor-in-chief of the Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Tumors of the Skin journal.

Membership in professional medical organizations

Dr. Bokhyan is one of the founders of the East European Sarcoma Group (EESG). He is a member of АSCO, CTOS.
