Education
In 1991, Pr. Aliev graduated from School No. 134 in Baku with a silver medal and was accepted to the Faculty of Medical Practice of the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute. In 1992, he continued his education in the USA (through State Educational Program), and in 1999 he graduated from the New York University. Between 1999 and 2002, he studied at clinical residency at the Pittsburg Medical University clinic (USA). During his residence, he completed rotations on surgical treatment of head and neck tumors.
In 2003, scientific work defended by Pr. Aliev in the USA was approved by the Azerbaijan Higher Attestation Commission and he received a PhD degree. In 2008, he successfully defended his DSc thesis and received a degree of DSc.
Between May of 2009 and November of 2010, Pr. Aliev trained in Germany where he confirmed his surgical diploma. In 2011, he confirmed his surgical diploma in Austria.
In 2016, Pr. Aliev received the title of Professor of Oncology and received international surgical diploma in oncology of head and neck at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (USA).
Professional experience
After return home, Pr. Aliev started working at the Azerbaijan Medical University.
Between 2011 and 2013, Pr. Aliev worked as an oncological surgeon at the Department of Head and Neck Tumors at the Barmherzigen Schwestern clinic (Austria). In 2013–2014 he served as a prorector on medical practice at the Azerbaijan Medical University. Since 2013, he works as a leading researcher and surgical oncologist of the National Oncology Center of Azerbaijan Republic. In 2015, he was appointed the Rector of the Baku branch of the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University by an order from the President of the Azerbaijan Republic.
Scientific interests
Pr. Aliev is one of the leading specialists on diagnosis and treatment of head and neck tumors in Azerbaijan. He actively uses best practices from all over the world in his own work.
One of the main topics of his scientific and practical work is pathology of the thyroid gland. Under Pr. Aliev’s supervision, a combination program on prevention and early diagnosis of thyroid cancer was created. In the framework of this program, in the last several years epidemiological and molecular and genetic studies for thyroid pathologies have been performed in Azerbaijan. This research led to determination of the most significant factors of thyroid cancer and development of a prevention program.
Pr. Aliev uses cutting-edge technologies in diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer: thin needle biopsy, radioisotopic study of the thyroid, SPECT-CT (single-photon emission computed tomography), treatment with radioactive iodine, etc. Advanced diagnostic techniques allow to diagnose thyroid tumors and the level of their advancement. These data are used for planning of surgical treatment and therapy with radioactive iodine.
Other main topic of his scientific and practical work is diagnosis and treatment of pharyngeal cancer. He has implemented in clinical practice a special device allowing people to talk freely after removal of the pharynx. He also actively promotes laser surgery at early stages of pharyngeal cancer leading to organ-sparing operations without radiation therapy. Pr. Aliev also uses advanced methods of treatment of skin tumor of the head and neck, tongue, parotid, and submandibular glands.
Pr. Aliev regularly presents the results of his studies at international congresses, conferences, oncological meetings. With the direct involvement of Pr. Aliev, a number of scientific and practical cooperation agreements between the National Oncology Center of Azerbaijan Republic and leading European and American cancer centers were signed, for example with MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, Texas, USA).
Due to his organizational skills and under his direct supervision, Azerbaijan regularly hosts international conferences on diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors and invites famous scientists from Europe and the USA. These conferences take place not only in Baku, but in other cities (Nakhchivan, Ganja, Gabala, Sheki et al.). Pr. Aliev’s presentations at these events are invaluable to practicing doctors and residents.
Pr. Aliev initiated and directly participated creation of the Azerbaijan National Cancer Registry (Oncoregistry) which was included into the Association of International Cancer Research.
Publications
Pr. Aliev has authored more than 40 publications on problems of modern oncology including 1 monograph, 4 textbooks and 1 guideline.
Under Pr. Aliev scientific supervision, 4 dissertations for the degree of PhD in medicine are being conducted.
In 2014, he became a member of the editorial board of Azerbaijan Oncology Journal.
Memberships in professional medical organizations
Pr. Aliev is a member of American and European societies of clinical oncologists. In 2015 he became a member of the Dissertation Committee in oncology, radiation diagnostics and therapy and a member of the Academic Council of the National Oncology Center of Azerbaijan Republic.
